There’s no way to completely get rid of allergens and pollutants in your home. However, these tips reduce irritants and lower the impact they have on your family. If you want to improve the air quality indoors, here are five easy steps you can take.
1. Keep Your Floors Clean
Pollutants and allergens settle from the air onto your floors and become trapped in your carpet. Remove allergens by vacuuming and sweeping twice a week. Use a vacuum that uses a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. They’ve been proven to remove dust mites, pollen, and pet dander to improve indoor air quality.
2. Keep Humidity Levels at a Healthy Range
Mold and dust mites love moisture. If you have high humidity in your home, it becomes the perfect breeding ground for these types of allergens. Keep the humidity between 30% and 50%.
If it is difficult to maintain this range, invest in a dehumidifier for rooms where humidity is a problem. Most dehumidifiers come with sensors that detect the amount of moisture in the air and turn off automatically when an acceptable level has been reached.

A large majority of our cleaning products contain synthetic fragrances and emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Many of them are proven to be toxic. Typically, these chemicals are listed on the label as “fragrance.” Because it’s hard to know exactly what is in some products, it’s a good idea to steer clear of dryer sheets, fabric softeners, candles, and air fresheners that aren’t labeled “all-natural” or “eco-friendly”.
5. Keep Houseplants That Improve Indoor Air Quality
A NASA study found that plants help to remove toxins from the air. Choose houseplants for your living spaces that filter contaminants. Be careful not to overwater potted plants. Too much water can foster mold growth in the soil.
