When you own a home, you know it takes effort to keep it in good shape and well-maintained. You can easily clean gutters yourself when armed with the right knowledge.

If you’re cleaning gutters for the first time, it might seem overwhelming and time-consuming. The good news is that you only have to do it at least twice a year.

Knowing how to clean gutters is essential for good house maintenance because the gutter system helps direct rainwater and melting snow away from the rooflines. It has many benefits, including protecting your home from ceiling and wall leaks, damage to the foundation, and the surrounding landscaping.

Here’s How to Clean Gutters In 4 Easy Steps

There are two methods that you can use to clean your gutters, including:

  •  Climbing a ladder and using a hose to clean the gutter
  • Using a gutter cleaning wand/pressure washer from the ground.

Each of these methods is effective, but the second is more costly and requires some skill. In this article, you will learn how to clean gutters while using a ladder.

Safety and Materials

You will need an extension or step ladder, bucket, gloves, and a garden trowel. Before you climb the ladder, make sure that it is stable and firmly placed on the ground.

Place all the cleaning tools you need inside the bucket to limit the number of trips you will climb up and down the ladder. Use the bucket to store the debris. If the gutter is compacted, use the garden trowel to loosen and scoop the leaves.

How to Clean Gutters with a Garden Hose

After removing all the debris and gunk from the gutter, use a garden hose to clear the gutter channel and downspouts. While you eliminate the blockages, check for possible leaks in the gutter system.

When spraying water using a hose, start from the end of the gutter and work your way towards the downspout. Be careful not to spray the fascia boards and roof shingles with water while you’re cleaning the gutters.

Inspect the Gutter System

Once you are satisfied that your gutter is clean, it’s time to inspect the entire gutter system. Check that all points are properly attached. Remove the elbow joined to the downspout and clean it.

Check that the gutters have a downslope of about ¼ inch towards the downspout for the water to drain properly.

Gutter Sealants

Gutter sealants are used on aging gutters to fill leaking gutter joints and prevent water leaks during heavy rains. Water leaks can cause lots of damage, especially if they aren’t directing the water away from the house.

Cleaning gutters isn’t complicated. This necessary home maintenance task will help you keep your home looking attractive while preventing water damage to your property.
